Well… this place quietly made its way into my top five destinations in the world
(If you’re wondering what else makes the list, it’s the San Blas Islands in Panama, the Tobago Cays in the Caribbean, Magnetic Island in Australia, and the Tuamotus in the Pacific) ( I couldn’t possibly put them in any kind of order however)
The experience felt even more special because we had a visitor. Young Alison Sneddon flew out to Belitung for some well-earned rest and relaxation, having studied the rally programme in advance and picked the one place she most wanted to see. This was it — her destination of choice.
We arrived with no real expectations. After all, we’d already been spoiled by so many beautiful places that it was hard to imagine anything topping the beaches we’d been hanging about on. But it did. Completely.
This place is something special — and if you’re thinking of coming, my advice is to go sooner rather than later, while it still feels like a secret.
What to do on Belitung
It’s a small island, so you can see most of it in just a few days. The focus is on beautiful beaches, scuba diving, snorkelling, island hopping, hiking, and yoga. It feels a bit like Bali, but quieter and on a smaller scale. The roads are calm as well, so riding a moped feels safe—very different from Bali, where the traffic was always heavy
It was in Belitung that we said goodbye to Indonesia and set our sights on the next destination: Malaysia. After checking out—well, Evan, one of the local legends who helps cruisers navigate the logistics, did that for us—we were on our way.
The next country beckoned.
